Florencia McAllister, M.D. (   https://tamest.org/news/florencia-mcallister-2023-mbm-recipient/

is known for her work as a physician-scientist leading a basic and translational immunology laboratory. Her main academic contributions can be highlighted on the intersection of immunology, cancer biology, and the role of microbes in tumor behavior. Her 2019 paper published on Cell, entitled "Tumor Microbiome Diversity and Composition Influence Pancreatic Cancer Outcomes", has been cited more than 900 times. Dr. McAllister’s lab at MD Anderson Cancer Center is particularly invested in understanding how the immune system interacts with microbes to influence tumor initiation, progression, therapy responses, and metastasis. Her work has led to discoveries in T-helper-type 17 cytokines cells biology and their role in pancreatic cancer, as well as the potential for immune system-based cancer early detection, immunoprevention, and immunotherapy. Her lab utilizes various models and technologies, including genetically engineered or orthotopic mouse models, bone marrow chimeric animals, in vitro interactive modeling systems, flow cytometry, CyTOF, Immunoplex, single-cell sequencing, and a variety of imaging methods. Furthermore, they maintain a human microbial biobank to establish the translational relevance of their basic findings. Dr McAllister is a good friend of Prof Lee-Wei Yang's since their time in Pittsburgh. As a previous colleague of Prof Min-Chi Hung (洪明奇院士), she is invited to the keystone meeting entitled "Microbiota and Cancer Immunity" held in Academia Sinica on 3/17-3/20.
